  • The inaugural showing of the Hackney Bicycle Film Society will be on Monday 8th
    February.

The main Film will be A Sunday in Hell the 1977 100min documentary directed by
    Jørgen Leth.

The film is a chronology of the 1976 Paris-Roubaix bicycle race from the
perspective of participants, organizers and spectators.
Paris-Roubaix is the most famous and usually the most dramatic of the spring
classic cycle races. Much of the latter portion is over narrow, cobbled tracks
that choke with dust on dry days and become slick and muddy in rain. For the
riders it's a challenge to keep going without puncturing or crashing.

The film captures not just the events of the 1976 edition but the atmosphere of
a professional race. It begins by introducing the contenders: Eddy Merckx, Roger
De Vlaeminck (the previous year's winner), Freddy Maertens, and Francesco Moser,
each with their supporting riders (the domestiques), who are charged with
helping their team leader win. The film gives views of the team director,
protester (the race is halted for a while), spectator, mechanic and rider. As
the Hell of the North is entered the selection begins. Riders puncture, crash,
make the wrong move - the race plays out. By the finish in the velodrome in
Roubaix only a few are in with a chance. The winner is a surprise, but that is
part of the appeal. Post-race the exhausted riders, mired in dirt, give
interviews in the velodrome's showers. They look like men who have been to hell
    and back.

"You can see every bead of sweat on the cyclists and every smashed-up ankle. It
really makes you never want to get on a bike again. But it is an amazing film."

    • Nick Fraser, BBC commissioning editor

"Arguably the best film ever made about professional cycling" - Peter Cowie,
    International Film Guide

  • God is no one interested in this film I thought it would be a hit.

    Zebra

  • Bump. This is next Monday.

  • This is my favourite film.
    Ever.
The shots are sectacular, the riders are legendary, and the score is haunting.
I play it my head while I'm commuting at top speed in shit weather.
If you've not seen it then get yourself there.
I'd give my left knacker to see it on the big screen!

  • There is a simple need to support events like- use it, or lose it.

I do the Riverside Studios version- a fantastic afternoon yet again this year, and I think beat last year's version, and I've seen some truly amazing pics- I have no doubt this is an other- I think I've seen it, or maybe it was another year, but do please go.

I live in Harefield - beyond Uxbridge, so its a bit of a way to go for me, so I won't be there, I think you'll understand.

    Enjoy!

  • I'll be there. Email on its way.

  • This looks like it would make an interesting evening, such a shame I won't be around or I would have definitely made it down.

  • Bump. This is tonight. Don't forget to e-mail the address in the OP if you want to come along.

  • The night was a great success so many people turned up we had to do two showings the next film will be on Monday 8th March at the Calthorpe and the showing will be The Bicycle Thieves the 1948 Italian classic.

We will be having monthly shows after that

    Zebra

  • bugger! missed it! and such a good film....as much for the fantastic old BMW bikes and 70's fashion as the cycling ;)

  • Any more of these in the future?

Need something to do at nights when I'm working in London during the week

  • Any more of these in the future?

    What Zebra said:

We will be having monthly shows after that

  • I agree, a great evening.

The pub, the Calthorpe Arms , is splendidly grotty and should become a listed building .

  • The Next showing of the Hackney Bicycle Film Society will be on Monday 8th March 2010 at 7:30. After that there will be regular showings on the second Monday of each month a programme is available with films monthly till February next year.

As it is also International Womens day on the 8th we have decided to show 2 Seconds (1998)
a French Canadian film featuring a Downhill Cyclist who becomes a Courier and has a wacky relationship with a Grouchy Bicycle Shop owner. There are good downhill racing scenes at the beginning and great observations on cars lorries and taxi's throughout the film. It has subtitles, was directed by Manon Briand, and stars Charlotte Laurier and Dino Tavarone.

The film show will start at 7:30 sharp with some shorts.

  • Dear all,

The next Bicycle Film Society Show this Monday 12th April and will be The Flying Scotsman (2006).

The Flying Scotsman is a feature film based on the remarkable true story of Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree. In 1993, and as an unemployed amateur, Obree broke the world one-hour record on a bike of his own revolutionary design, which he constructed out of scrap metal and parts of a washing machine.

Because of the success of last months talk prior to the film we will have another talk and pictures of cycling in foreign parts this time from myself on Community Bike Projects http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=List_of_Community_Bicycle_Groups from Italy and the US.

I look forward to seeing you

    Zeb

  • Just found this thread, sounds great, just signed up so will definitely be there!
    Nice work

  • The next showing of the Hackney Bicycle Film Society will be the documentary by filmmaker Stephen Auerbach, which tells the story of the Race Across America (RAAM), an epic 3000‐mile bicycle race that challenges riders to cross the country in just ten days.

First held in 1982, RAAM is considered the most challenging sporting event in the world. Top competitors ride over 300 miles per day and sleep only a few hours each night. With little prize money at stake, the fundamental goal of the race is simply to finish, a challenge half of all riders fail to meet.

The Showing will be in Stoke Newington on Monday the 14th June

To attend you need to be a member which you can apply for by supplying your home e-mail address, Occupation, and actual address. Please do not supply your work e-mail as I am sick of getting peoples out of office reply every time I do a film notification.

  • Hooray, I'll finally be able to make this one, having missed every single screening so far. Look forward to it!

  • Shame, I can't make this one (again). Love the film. Always worth seeing again.

  • Dear all,
We would just like to let you you all know that the next showing of the Hackney Bicycle Film society will be on Monday 11th October.
The main feature will be Beijing Bicycle but in addition to that because of the success of our premier of Leigh Andrews short A Sense of Safety last month we are bringing you another premier, the first European showing of Hoima Bicycle
    Details of the films below
    Hoima Bicycle
    (30 min documentary)
The principle form of taxi transport in Hoima and many other rural towns in Uganda is the bicycle taxi, locally called a "Boda-boda". This is a traditional sit up and beg Indian made bike with a padded seat on the rear carrier. Ladies sit side-saddle, gents sit astride. Almost every street corner and outlying hamlet has a stand of Boda-bodas who carry not only people but all types of load weighing up to 200kg.
In 2008 Designer, lecturer and former cycle courier Jason Morris went to visit his mother Shirley who works as a missionary in Hoima a provincial town in Uganda, there he met the Boda-boda riders of the Hoima United Riders Association. Dismayed by the antiquated nature of the Hero Bicycles and impressed by the large loads they carry Jason was inspired to combine his experience and talents to design a bicycle more fit for purpose.
Jason’s documentary beautifully captures not only his own bicycle design and process but life and conditions in of the people in Hoima.
    Beijing Bicycle
    (113 min Feature)
Guei a teenager who arrives in the big city looking for work; he and a handful of other youngsters are hired as bicycle messengers, with their employer giving them new bikes under the condition that they're paid ten yuan for each message they deliver, and the bicycles are theirs once they've made 58 trips. Guei discovers the job is not an easy one, as he deals with the complexity of the huge city, confusion over who gets what message, and the condescending attitude Beijing residents often display toward the new arrivals. Guei is determined to make good and is close to owning his bike when it's stolen; Guei's boss tells him the only way he can keep is job is if he can find the bicycle, which, in a city the size of Beijing, is no easy task. Against all odds, Guei finds the bicycle, but it's now in the hands of Jian, who claims he got it at a second-hand shop and isn't about to give it up. Guei steals the bike back from Jian, but now has to deal with the teenaged tough and his roughneck friends.

  • Hackney Bicycle Film Society Update 30th October 2010

The next film showing of the HBFS will be on Monday 8th November at 7:30 Vittorio De Sica’s classic Ladri di biciclette or in English Bicycle Thieves. In it a poor young father in post-war ravaged Rome finally finds work putting up Rita Hayworth posters around town, only have his precious bicycle stolen the first day on the job

This will be preceded by Maz Lewis’s half hour documentary Good Friday which was featured at last years Bicycle Film Festival and is all about the Herne Hill Velodrome. We are showing this in support of the Herne Hill Velodrome which is currently fighting for its long term future http://www.savethevelodrome.com/ there will also be a speaker from the Campaign and we will be encouraging you to sign up to their pledge.

On December 13th we will be showing Les Triplettes de Belleville or Belleville Rendezvous and in the previous week 6 – 10th December we have Iain Boal bicycling historian coming to speak to us. Details of him and links to his lectures to the Copenhagen Museum of the Bicycle can be seen at http://www.copenhagenize.com/2010/04/iain-boal-bicycle-historian.html. We are currently looking for a venue so can not confirm an exact day that week but as this is a new venture for us it would be good to know how many of you would be interested in hearing Iain speak.

Lastly in January we will be a year old and will be asking everyone to renew their membership as part of that process we will be asking people to vote on the films to be shown in 2011 so if you have any suggestions of films we would be glad to hear them.

To join HBFS or contact us our e-mail is hackneybicyclefilmsociety (at) gmail.com

  • I have Ladri di biciclette on DVD. I was given it last Christmas. I started watching it. A beautifully shot film with a tangible sense of mood but so woefully sad that I am afraid I stopped watching after about 30 minutes and haven't had the hea\rt to go back to it. Yourr notice reminds me that I must do and hope for a happy ending.

  • Clive, this is among the best drama of the 20th century!

If you were already moved by the early stages, that's the whole point!

Do go back and watch it in full--one of the best films that you'll ever watch.

And it's best to watch it in a cinema non-digitally (sadly, increasingly difficult). It's a beautifully-shot film that hugely rewards watching it on a good analogue print.
