Poland, Mother from Lwow which was Poland in 1939 but is now in the Ukraine. Had the usual knock on the door at midnight told two hours to pack and was shipped out to Siberia. Stalinists, Nazi's Russian's I hate them all. Mother was eventually in the WRAF, Father Merchant Navy (invasion of Italy and Africa, Atlantic Convoys), Uncle flew Lancansters on bombing runs over Germany and another family member fought at Monte Casino.
I believe and still believe the Stalinist invasion of Poland was a disgrace and is a major blot on the history of the USSR....it was an appaling attack on the people of Poland...it included members of the Polish Communist party...a disgrace.
But i applaud your family....Monte Casino was a vicious killing match....its funny people only ever talk about Normandy and how they were such heroes but the guys in Italy, Bomber Command [now seen as murders] and the Merchant Navy are forgotten along with those who fought in the far east....some of mine were in Bomber Command and other Navy...my dad was a medic....in Normandy as and my father in law was in the RA in Normandy...but nothing like Monte Cassino....an uncle in the first war was in the merchant navy and on leave was given a white feather...he was sunk four times by German U-boats but survived. I take my hat to your uncle who flew in Lancs over Germany.....for my MA i did a dissertation on Bomber Command and dedicated it to the memory of the 55,000 who died.....so cheers to your family.
