pete, vaz here in london does the job for £65. that will give you a guideline. you might be able to pick up the ends themselves (ebay?) and get someone local to do it. obviously welding is a proper job

they wont reduce clearance of your back wheel as they stick out. you are best off sending it to a frame build to have them source them for you, and it will not be very cheap

HubJub have Tecnociclos, £9.50 a pair...
edit: ^^^ Yeah, what he said... :) -

you want to e sure the angel of where your seat and chain stays goes into the end is correct, and that the end attaches in the right way for your frame, and that the width of where the end of the seat and chain stays goes is the right width

i was thinking it i could get something similar to this that would when fitted would be about 1 1/2" in front of where the dropouts are now? am i wrong?

Vaz's brother does all that stuff, he works at Roberts...
Saw a job he'd done the other week that was sitting around the workshop waiting for paint, looked like a nice and tidy job... -

or seeing as my frame is just cromo surely i can get some track ends to my spec cut out of some steel plate and braised in?
-
• #10
that would cost loads of cash... to do a one off laser cutting, or custom machining,

see 63xc.com
If you know the right people...... :) -

Witcomb would do it. They can source all kinds of dropouts/track ends to match different rear triangle geometry.
-
• #13
i was going to say witcomb as well they may take a while though, but it would be a proper job.
-
• #14
also google ceeway loads of track ends, based in Eirith, Kent / s.e London boarders, where that man was stoned to death, and the stabbings out side the flats, you know the place.
-
• #15
I was also going to say check Ceeway for the track ends, but Roberts themselves are pretty decent value, easy to get to and reliable. They shouls also be able to source stuff from Ceeway.

Henry James, one of the big US suppliers of frame building bits fabricate horizontal dropouts specifically designed for retrofitting to geared bikes with vertical dropouts, you can see them here. They're cut with longer seat and chain stay plates, so that you can just cut the old dropout out and cut a fresh new slots for the dropout, instead of debrazing the old dropout and cleaning up/botching the old slots to get the new dropout in.

umm what about get a new frame...? seems like a load of hassle for a cro-mo frame to me... but I have bugger all experience in this matter (never changed dropouts>ends), except that I ride a Tange frame (when its raining) and its heavy and rides like a ship. Maybe your frame is something really special, or you're short of cash and looking for a cheap way to get your clearances down, both of which I imagine are good reasons.

Hi I have a bike with vertical dropouts wondering if its easiest and cheapest to find a frame builder/ mechanic who can convert them to horizontal in order to use them as a fixie Anyone know any ppl who could do that kind of thing cheaply? Preferably in london

ted james aka superted from 14bike co charges around £50 iirc (only for steel frames)

just wondering if anyone has done this

or just find a magic gear?
thats what i did, works fine -
• #24
is that just getting the right sprocket ?
i might be sounding like a retard lol
-
• #25
Yeah, magic gear is where you run a sprocket+cog combo that fits the vertical dropouts without requiring tension adjustment.
Pain to get right. Pain to keep right - as the chain wears out.
i was just reading the thread about the blb coppi's. can i get track ends to braise into my converted road frame that will reduce the clearance of my back wheel? does anyone know how much they cost and how much roughly they would cost to get fitted?
ta.
