Depends on your roads and your legs innit?
~70" around London.
Roads vary around the coast from flat to uphill. Road fixies ride 42x 16 around here but they got 700c wheels. So would a 34x 14 be ok for an mtb or maybe 34 x 16.

I'm currently cycling around on 32/20 on my MTB, at least 16 miles/day.
So gear ratio doesn't really matter as long as you're not fucking up your legs with it.

you cheeky git ha ha!!

34/14 would probably be your best bet.

Dont you find that a bit low geared?

I'm riding 32/13 at the moment, could probably stick a few more GI on there for a perfect ratio.
On 26" wheels I think 34/13 or 34/12 would be good starting places.

I'll try that. If its too high for the climbs I can always go to a 16 cog. cheers

- Its piss easy to skid. I run 46/19 myself.
+1 its an excellent london gear imo

i'm on 52/16.
but i'm going down to 48/16 soon.
52 is nice on straights but i feel that i need a little more control.

Dont you find that a bit low geared?
Very, very low geared. My legs look like they're going Sonic speed and i'm cycling along at 6mph...
But I use it off-road so I need a pretty low gear.

Great film.

was/am riding 52/14 but soon to change TO 48/15 maybe 15. The wear and tear on my knees with the 52 ratio has finally comeabout. im not interested in shit knees lol.

I went from 48/18 to 48/17 and was suprised at how different it felt, I feel much faster
But this could be as much to do with new cog, new chain and cleaning and re lubing my chain ring

I have been thinking of putting something easier on it, but where would the fun be in that? Maybe I'll try the archway/highgate route home on it soon and see if its possible!
-
• #818
so, you're running 108GI? that is silly. for the health of your knees. i run 66GI and am thinking of going down. spin to win.
-
• #819
You are riding a gear which is higher than what most riders use on a track on the street.
I can imagine the bike will have zero agility and in the heavy London traffic you will really struggle with delicate moves that require instant acceleration and decelaration. In this weather I am amazed your knees have not given out. I would seriously considering gearing down. With a low gearing you will learn to spin, which will be far more efficient and kinder on the knees.I'm currently running 66 and can hit 30mph in a couple of seconds and can get it up to about 34mph when needs be

106 Gi up Highgate would be a nightmare if inposible. Unless you really are an unbeveavable rider.
Also, if you are passing that way tonight, drop in at North drinks at the Flask in Highgate.

Try getting up Highate Hill on that. Would be a laugh!
-
• #822
and getting down would be terrifying!
65.3 is spot on for my needs.

On my previous bike I rode 42/16 fixed (69 and a bit inches?)
On new bike i'm now on 46/17 (72") and finding it a bit ploddy when i'm tired or going uphill, makes it feel like a bit of a drag. Am about to order a 44T ring to bring it down to 68.5", think this'll be fine for me.

73"

52x18(78") ss for shorter rides
50x18(75") ss for longer rides
52x20(70") fixed for longer hillier rides (still not that long mind)
It doesn't matter, he's got no legs.
