Ahead Stem Question

Posted on
  • Is it ok to use a "standard" ahead stem with at 26mm bar?

I have recently converted as i want something a bit stiffer, but most of my bars are 26 and there is a bit of a gap in the stem, will i live or will i explode in a big ball of flames on the way to reading at the weekend?

    thanks

  • Standard usually means standard 'road' clamp which is indeed 26.0.

If it is an MTB stem standard could mean 25.4, though.

  • Negative shim.

    i wouldn't recommend a 26mm bar in a 25.4mm stem.

thanks for that max, i didnt realise thats what the defining factor was, picking up at 26.0 one one monday anyway and i'm sure it'll be fine till then.

    bullshit.

it will be fine, i've been doing it for ages, on and off the track.

  • i've been doing it for ages with quills, as anyone with any sense says its fine, just wanted to double check it was ok with ahead stems.

Just because you've got away with it, doesn't mean it's right I'm afraid.

You can weaken alloy 26mm road bars by clamping them in 25.4 stems, especially Ahead versions as they pinch in two places. If you really must do it, quills would be better as they open out more evenly.

So much crap gets talked on this forum.

+1, and it seems to be getting worse recently.
