London to Brighton Cycle for Haiti

Posted on
• Hi guys,

On the 20th February, I will be riding from London to Brighton with a group of other students aged 15-18 to raise money for the tragedy in Haiti, that left 1.5 million people homeless. We need to put a stop to the rising death toll which has recently hit 150,000.

We are aiming to raise £10,000 for the Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella organization for 13 humanitarian aid agencies including Action Aid, the British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International UK, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Help the Aged, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund, World Vision.

Their latest appeal:
"A devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake has hit Haiti, including the densely populated capital Port-Au-Prince and the surrounding area. Although there is as yet no accurate assessment of the death toll it is clear that millions of people live in the affected area. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, greatly increasing the risk that people will suffer or die in the aftermath of a natural disaster. Communications have been severely disrupted and many roads are blocked with rubble. Despite the challenges, many DEC member agencies are already helping on the ground while others are preparing to do so. Very substantial humanitarian assistance will be required to ensure survivors get food, clean water, emergency shelter, medical care and other support."
It will be the largest distance we've ever cycled in one go, but we're determined to push ourselves to the limit to make this happen.

We would be extremely grateful for any donations you can forward to our JustGiving page, set up by my bro, at http://www.justgiving.com/London2BrightonCycle4Haiti .

Every little helps.

Thanks to all,
Byron/ebenzo and the rest of us!

• It's for a really good cause, if anyone could donate we'd be so grateful!

• Sounds good, and i wish u the best of luck. But i have already donated. Also, i doubt you'll need to push yourself too hard, it's only 50 miles. ;)

• it wouldnt hurt to donate just a bit more ;D haha thanks anyway

• Can others join the ride?

• Yeah sure, the more the merrier!

Bear in mind the oldest so far will be 18 and youngest 15 ;)
None of us are exceptionally fit either and we will be going at the pace of the slowest people...we aim to average about 10 mph inclusive of breaks, photo stops, etc.
I doubt we'll get lost, we have an experienced navigator (guided us through Wales on our Duke of Edinburgh trip) and GPS.

There's been some interest at school as well from those wanting to do it on mountain bikes - should I advise against that?

The death toll is up to 150,000 so much help is needed as possible.
So if you decide to come, please help spread the word!

• Hi

The London to Brighton is a good ride, my flatmate and I did it last year. I would advise you keep on the smaller roads, there are a coupe of prefered routes but most go over ditchling beacon, if you are fixed then you may need to walk up - also there are some fairly long hills to go down, I would't want to do it on a small gear and I'd be careful if you are breakless tho I rode with one of the couriers who was doing it brakeless.

As far as mountain bikes are concerned I would have thought they should be able to keep up as they can coast down the hills and will find it easier going up, even if they will have to work on the flat,
Tell them to pump their tyres up though.

Thanks Chris for the advice :)
I've found a few routes on the net like this one : http://www.freewebs.com/cycleroutes/

I only have the option to do it fixed anyway, others will be opting for the freewheel. My gear ratio will be 46x16 so I'm anticipating some walking on the way.

Okay, one or two of us are exceptionally fit, but think of the rest of the group!!

• 46 x 16 has to be the best ratio :) that's what I ride, reckon you could make all the hills apart from maybe the beakon.

• ^Don't mind a bit of walking :)

Donations, anyone?

• calvin shut up ur not exeptionallly fit.

• calvin shut up ur not exeptionallly fit.

Cough. Look in the mirror before you go ranting off - great bit o' advice fer ya!

• i never said IM exeptionally fit but ur no where near exeptionally fit.

•
Who's that to?

• keep the donations coming!!! (im the "expert" nav byron mentioned).

should be fun!

• How many people have you got doing the ride now?

• Around 20, 16 of whom are confirmed.

• Anyone is welcome to join, as long as you commit some form of donation to the charity fund.

I've also got plans to hire out a helmet camera for the day to capture the moments!

Thanks

• A bit late, but in case you were wondering, all 15 of us made it to Brighton.
The huge range in fitness meant we cycled into the night and was forced to take a route along the treacherous A23.

Despite all that, we loved it and it was definitely okay doing it fixed. My legs weren't sore at all - my arse, on the other hand...
In fact, we enjoyed it so much we're going to do it again this weekend or the next.

We're approaching the £1000 barrier and donations are still welcome.
