Campag compatibility? New rear wheel

Posted on
  • Hi, I just got myself a rear carbon tubular off eBay, it’s got a campag hub and currently has an eight speed cartridge sitting on it. I ride a single speed so will get a Campag Single speed conversion kit for it, but just wondering if I’d need to change my chain and chain ring to match, or will it be ok as it is?

Also if anyone has an opinion on which conversion kit is best, or thinks I'll need to do anything else other than switch to carbon brake pads to make this baby run, I'd be interested to know.

    Advice would be appreciated, thanks.

  • Nothing weird about this one, run an 1/8 chain if you like, or any old 6/7/8 speed chain with any 3/32 front end or an 1/8 chainring if you go 1/8 chain.
    As you were.
    S.

    Cheers Scherrit.

  • Does someone make a campag splined conversion kit now, I thought all kits and cogs were shimano splined still?

  • Yeah, I found this one (8th down the list on the link). although because Campag change their systems from time to time it won't fit all hubs. Just ordered mine, fingers crossed...

If it doesn't fit I'll take apart the 8 speed cassette that was on it, use the 16T cog and place 2 larger cogs either side to stop the chain derailing. Gotta love a bodge-job!

  • Looks good. If you do go for the cassette option just keep an eye on chain tension because using ramped cogs could be tricky.

  • Cheers, will do! It'd be good to use a singlespeed cog rather than ramped as I'd rather not be forced to use a chain tensioner... If I'm honest, mainly for vanity reasons! I'm always pretty careful about keeping my chain as tight as possible though.

Sorry.. but that won't fit. Campag 8 speed freehub is different from 9/10/(11?) speed. You could take apart an 8 speed cassette (I think you can separate them) and re-arrange them in an order to suit the gear you're trying to use.

Personally I'd say it was more hassle than it is worth, especially as 8 speed campag stuff comes at a cost premium anyway.

You are correct. Although smallest must always be next to the lockring

  • the splines on the 8 speed hubs aren't as deep as 9 or 10. they used steel rings on the 8 so were that much stronger - i think!

  • Cheers for all the input. The kit's on its way now, so I'll just have to wait and see, but the guy from the shop was really cool about sending it back if it didn't fit. We exchanged photo's and measurements, but you can never tell until your fingers are oily!

I'll let you know how it pans out.

Yep, you were right. : (

My last hope is to either get in touch with Hope and remove the freewheel hub part and replace it, or run one of the cassette cogs as a single with spacers. Failing that, eBay gets another Zipp Carbon Tubular!

  • Ed take a file to the splines of the spacers, easy. Just take it slowly, only take a little off at a time and try the fit often. Thats what I was going to do to a shimano kit but in the end went with the rearranged cassette (it looked fucking horrendous and got plenty of funny looks, but worked) cos I was too lazy to bother. gone fixed now so don't need to worry about it anymore.
i can't see how there would be a problem with this, if there is some is bound to point it out any second now.....

  • I'd definitely do this, however the size of the conversion kit compared to the size of the freehub is so different that if I filed down the splines on the conversion kit, there would be about 1mm left!

Anyone know of a company that makes custom cogs?

  • Marchisio?

  • I ended up re-building the hub as Shimano in order to get a SS conversion kit that would fit. Got there in the end!
