Which BB Help

  • Ok so I'm about to buy a dura ace track chainset and I need some advice on the best BB to keep a perfect chain line..
The rear spacing is 120mm on an old holdsworth with english thread.
Is there a 'idiots' way of working out what size BB is required..?

  • the idiots way is to buy 2 dozen different lengths and keep swapping them in and out 'till you get it right.

  • hopefully you'll get a sensible answer soon from someone who knows better

  • The idiots way is to use anything other than a DuraAce BB. Get DuraAce hubs and a DuraAce sprocket too. They are all made to work together, surprisingly. Oh, and since everybody else has managed to resist so far, UTFS!

  • I would say that you need a 109mm BB to get the right chainline

  • He hasn't told us which DuraAce chainset (square or Octalink) or the hubs and sprocket he's using, so any advice at this stage will be wild speculation

  • ahh yes. Sorry, I thought I read he had DA hubs too

  • Hmmm, hubs.. It's a system x hub with a dura ace fixed sprocket.
The cranks are the dura ace that Hilary stone is selling on the sale pages.

  • Jokes - I've been having the same issue....

The idiots way is to use anything other than a DuraAce BB. ....UTFS!

Only if you're using the Octalink, bc a square taper BB does not seem to exist!

If you're using square taper it needs to be ISO and 108.5 or 109 or 109.5 depending where you read.

RE: Octalink vs square taper - I'd go for the Octalink version just bc finding an appropriate sealed square taper seems to be a bit of a mission. Phill Wood have BB's that work bc they have adjustable cups.

  • WTF is UTFS!..?

  • Use the search. But in a mean way.

  • Hover your mouse cursor over UTFS and all will be revealed. As it will with BB and NJS. Not sure about ISO or JIS though.

  • UTFS...ah understood now...
    Mr Tester...YCFRO...

  • Easy tiger. Its a forum welcome. Took me a year to get it though. ;)

Of course, if your next question is "Can I ride brakeless with only a freewhell?"....expect some more heat.

Actually, if you read between the lines, mdcc_tester was actually being helpful - though with the spice of some sarcasm.

  • Easy tiger..yes..nerves..new lingo...I'm only messin about anywayz..this place is always helpful and I'm lovin some of the dialogue and jokes...

  • WTF is UTFS!..?

    hehe.
