I think the phobia is justified.
Laying Up is still a black art. At the end of the day your at the mercy of the maker.
In my eyes Metal seems a safer option because the process of manufacture, welding, extruding, casting etc. is molten metal to solid. ie fault lines tend to be irradicated.
Carbon is basically sewn together, and glued, just like Shredded Wheat. The design intent might not be maintained at complex juntions. (hot spots)
Metal tends to draw when failing. Carbon splinters.
Metal seems to age and resist the elements much better.
(This is all hear say. At the end of the day, metal can be used badly.
I just wnted to give reason for phobia.)
Carbon is good 100% of the time 60% of the time.

Okay, you have a valid fear then :-)
Not sure I agree that that most people are in your camp and have experimented with carbon and had failures though?
I reckon the fear is more irrational than that. Probably even a phobia for it!I should point out it was an MTB carbon bar, when it broke, it shatter, and I have some small fragments that cut in my hand from the experiment
Now obviously I know that carbon fibre technology is a lots better than in the early '00/late '90, but it still give me the willies when I think about it.

If you are happy to fly by commercial carriers then you are trusting your life to carbon composites.
The vast majority of modern aircraft have a very high percentage of CC in their construction. -

Form, go for it, since hillbilly recommended it, get it.

The worst thing about carbon is I don't think it is easily recyclable like steal or aluminum is.
