LMAO - I just been going through all this over the last few weeks.
You'll have to do your research on Sheldon Brown.
If you want a fixed gear, get a BB with width 107mm or 110 thereabouts. Also ensure you sort out the tapering question http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbtaper.html - this is important because otherwise your chainline will be messed up.
Good luck.

LBS, measure threads.
24 tpi good, 26 tpi, try here http://sheldonbrown.com/raleigh26.html
I just bought a new frame (Raleigh Vitesse) to make in to a fixed gear.
Can anyone tell me how I can find out the spec for the bottom bracket? It didn't come with one so I don't know what size it is.
Any help would be much appreciated!
