  • Wild Whale (just like Wild salmon) is surely more nutricous & ethical?

It wasnt a dig at the issue. If youd seen the doco youd know what I mean, They were eating enormous amounts of meat, had a industrial freezer full of it. The cook was a vegatarian which made it more funny.

  • 'acid' or rotten butter. as with all things controversial, each side has a tale. i support the sea shepherds direct action. haven't greenpeace had their share of criticism too?

    to be fair, the bottle is tiny in comparison to the equipment that japanese whaler have;

  • Well, a small (and yes, ultimately futile) gesture is to stop buying tuna products. I'm not a vegetarian, and don't disagree with eating animal products, but if you want to argue against mass market fisheries the place to start is tuna.
It is a fish that really cannot be farmed and the fishing of it is shockingly destructive. It is really one of the few moves one can make against the Japanese fishing industry that would, in an ideal world, make a difference.
I wish that the Japanese (and me) could go on enjoying fish as cuisine, but they cannot, and should not, and as such refusing to buy tuna at the very least is a positive move.
Of course I'm a cynic who knows that this individual action will not make much difference, but if you won't practice what you preach then you're just a waste of space like everyone else.
It would be nice to think that doing this would have a repurcussive effect on the Japanese fisheries and their attitude toward whaling.

  • It's pretty much like Peru, the government in Peru were bribed by Japanese companies to let them overfish as much anchovies as they can without the law getting in the way (they have law to prevent overfishing of anchovies, but it being a 3rd world country, it's open to bribe sadly).

The worse thing is, chance are the Japanese company will cause the extinction of the anchovies in Peru, just because of mankind's fucking greed.

The fishing industry in Lima, Peru, over 10,000 strong protested to the government about it, they went to the outside of the government building to protest about them letting the Japanese businesses coming over and pushing the local one out and the next day, it was everywhere

But the next day, there's nothing about it in the newspaper, TV, or even the radio, why? because the government censored it, in order to keep recieving the bribe money from the Japanese companies.

Also, as that happen, quite a lots of the small local fishing companies in Peru suddenly now 'own' the government millions of dollars in debt.

That sort of shit happen everywhere, so yes, I'm going to support the Sea Shepherds.

  • Most Tuna we get in Britain comes from the indian ocean near africa, thats why the prices are so high - because of somalian pirates.

Are they stealing delicious tuna (the pirates)? Fuckers.

    @ Richard Cheese

Hitting them where it hurts (the wallet) is the way to go. If everyone bothered doing this rather than saying "HMM, I won't matter" it would actually work, but then most people can't think for themselves.

  • Are they stealing delicious tuna (the pirates)? Fuckers.

Nah, they just hijack all the ships.

Its pretty difficult 'hitting them in the wallet' when none of our fish really comes from japanese ships. Plus in my opinion sea fishing is way more eco than farming. The prawn farming industry for example totally destroying and polluting places like bangladesh & burma where a few fat cats bag all the profits.

  • i swear thats a joke, their ship's called the steve irwin, they're supported by the dalai lama, u can buy a dvd of their adventures, they have a little helicopter on their ship. It's like Steve Zissou meets the thunderbirds. Well funny though, everyone likes the trappings of military organisation for a good cause. .

    one word: overfishing.

  • bump

  • Right this isn't quiet on topic, but i figured it was better posting in here than starting a new thread, so for any one interested below is a cut and paste jobbie from an email i received after signing the petition.

I have just signed a petition to help protect one of the UK’s most pristine marine environments: http://protectchagos.org
We have until 12th February to convince the British Government to save the Chagos islands, one of the most important marine environments left on earth, by creating a protected area larger than the Great Barrier Reef.
Please visit the site and sign the petition to encourage the government to make the Chagos Protected Area a reality.
