• tynan have you tried a verify and permission repair of the disks either from your other mac or from the install disks? run the hardware test too.
    i cured a mac just by doing that and didn't need tostart using file salvage (better than data rescue imho)

    Yep, repaired permissions regularly - (when started up from the OS X install disc) - hardware test run without problem . . .still no luck :(

    no point spending money on a repair when i'll be buying one of the new i7 towers when they come out.

    The i7 iMacs (the 27" screen ones) are freaking freaking fucking freaking crazy. The screen makes my HD cinema displays look like cheap shitty soft £49.99 PC whorehouse monitors - the machine itself is super silent and it is bowl shockingly fast . . . I mean super duper bastard fast.
