tynan have you tried a verify and permission repair of the disks either from your other mac or from the install disks? run the hardware test too.
i cured a mac just by doing that and didn't need tostart using file salvage (better than data rescue imho)
the firewire died in my 5year old g5 last week. totally fried. all sorted with a £13 pci FW card.
no point spending money on a repair when i'll be buying one of the new i7 towers when they come out.
