On the 20th February, I will be riding from London to Brighton with a group of other students aged 15-18 to raise money for the tragedy in Haiti, that left 1.5 million people homeless. We need to put a stop to the rising death toll which has recently hit 150,000.
We are aiming to raise £10,000 for the Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella organization for 13 humanitarian aid agencies including Action Aid, the British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International UK, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Help the Aged, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund, World Vision.
Their latest appeal:
"A devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake has hit Haiti, including the densely populated capital Port-Au-Prince and the surrounding area. Although there is as yet no accurate assessment of the death toll it is clear that millions of people live in the affected area. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, greatly increasing the risk that people will suffer or die in the aftermath of a natural disaster. Communications have been severely disrupted and many roads are blocked with rubble. Despite the challenges, many DEC member agencies are already helping on the ground while others are preparing to do so. Very substantial humanitarian assistance will be required to ensure survivors get food, clean water, emergency shelter, medical care and other support."
It will be the largest distance we've ever cycled in one go, but we're determined to push ourselves to the limit to make this happen.
