Very very sad. I don't know how a parent deals with losing a kid - and the driver has to live with this for the rest of his life - pity for all concerned.

Terrible news.
This is from the Met:
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following the death of a 10 yr old girl in a road traffic collision in East Dulwich.
Police were called at approx 0800hrs to reports of a lorry in collision with a child on East Dulwich Road, jct with Peckham Rye, SE22.
Officers and LAS attended and discovered a girl, aged 10, suffering injuries. She was taken to Kings College Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 0844hrs.She has been identified as Latoya Smith aged 10 from SE27.
A formal identification has taken place and next of kin have been informed. A date for a post mortem examination is to be decided.
A man, aged 44, was arrested at the scene and has been taken to a south London police station. Enquiries continue.
Sergeant Simon Seeley, from the MPS Traffic Collision Investigation Unit said:“This incident happened at a busy time and lots of people will have witnessed this terrible tragedy. It is crucial that we establish the events that led up to this young child’s death and we appeal for anyone who saw this collision to get in touch. In particular, there were several people at a bus stop at the location, who kindly rushed to the assistance of the child before the ambulance arrived, we would very much like to speak to all of them.”
Anyone with information is to contact Collision Investigation Unit at Catford Traffic Garage on 020 8285 1574. -

What is going on with all these 'long term' road works at the moment. Oxford street and london bridge spring to mind. They all seem to be erected with very little consideration for peds. I just cant help but feel that the work could be done in a day rather than a month, the aparent lack of workers at either of the sites being a testament to this.
Condolences to all concerned.

first - terrible and horrific news. incredibly sad
on the 'long term' works;
were they there before snow? if not maybe freeze and snow is cause of 'long term' road works
i do think the roads are unbelievably rubbish in britain but theres not much they can do against snow/freeze, so i give authorities benefit of doubt with works/holes at the moment.
(i also wonder if the are minimum temperatures the workers are allowed to work in by unions? this might explain lack of workers?)
is anyone else finding the holes mental at the moment, every ten meters theres another huge one, its like the roads have been booby trapped.

i think your going over the top Jeez. although what you say does make me inclined to agree, but;
you dont know whether there is a minimum temperature road workers are allowed to work in - without being paid extra by the authorities - money which they might not have
also there maybe a problem with mixing/materials in low temperatures
id like to know what other countries are like, as i know as a tourist i always have rose tinted glasses and all the roads in spain seem amazing, and i cant remember what roads are like in eastern europe, it wasnt my primary concern,
are the any people from sweden or france here who could help with a comparison is england actually worse than other places?
and if we are is there a reason, i mean we arent the richest country out there, maybe its something we have to put up with? maybe there are more important things money has to go to?
....like war.... mmmm.... (i personally wish we were a neutral nation, maybe keeping nuclear weapons to appease those who desperately cling onto royal britannia, i mean who is really going to go through all france/europe and invade now? especially when we have with nuclear weapons in subs; i really dont see any need for all most all of our military. I'd prefer better repaired roads.)
oh and you ask why so many road works - cable, gas, water etc etc - again id like to see how other countries go about this?
is it cause britain has small roads and was poorly laid out originally that we are feeling the effects now? or do we have different legislation on what you can and cant dig up here? or do we repair roads worse than other countries? - would this again be explain by us being poor?

The road works have been there since before christmas with barely any work being done, they just dug up half the road and seemed to just stop.
Apparently it's because of some gas leak problem....Disgusting that they haven't solved the problem after more than a month and are still relying on the temporary lights at this very busy junction.

Maybe an inacurate assesment but could it be that the longer a private contractor leaves a hole in the road the more time they can invoice for due to 'works being undertaken' for the duration?
-
• #18
it would be nice is all of these questions could be answered, so with all the facts interested parties could put together an answer so that things could improve.
and this debate might develop into something of use not just a loads of half baked/ill informed opinions which dont really help anyone. (Mine are just as ill informed)
as i agree with everyone here - the roads are unbearable.
council workers? road workers? contractors? unionists? forgein people with proper non tourist knowledge of 'other' roads please speak up.

Sadly there is no blame, just lack of consideration when rolling out the road works.

(4) they are done to such a poor standard that the resultant pot-holes are invariably potential death-traps for bikers - motorised and pedal-powered - and expensive for car drivers.
- TONS
we should photograph and list all the pot holes. every buckled wheel and flat tire we make a claim citing from this list of holes. the council will pay out if its over a certain size!

Was cycling home from my girlfriends house this morning and saw loads of police at the junction of Peckham Rye and E Dulwich road.
There was a lorry and stuff in the road under the back end of it, turns out a 10 year old (pedestrian not cyclist) was killed by the HGV according to LBC news. I saw what I presumed to be the driver in tears at the side of the road with police.
So tragic, they have been doing road works on that junction for weeks now (though I have barely seen a single workman) and left it with temporary traffic lights that make it dangerous for both cars and pedestrians/cyclists alike in the mornings it's just a clusterfuck of all three trying to make it across the junction.
As they are temporary lights it's not always clear when it's safe for pedestrians to cross, someone on the east dulwich forum actually commented a few weeks ago what with schools starting soon it was going to be really dangerous for the school kids.
Then this happens....
If they had pulled their finger out and done the works that needed to be done and got the proper lights back up and running chances are this wouldn't have happened...
So so sad, I've been avoiding that junction since the temporary lights were put up and will continue to do so, be careful around there.
