Laying Up is still a black art. At the end of the day your at the mercy of the maker.
In my eyes Metal seems a safer option because the process of manufacture, welding, extruding, casting etc. is molten metal to solid. ie fault lines tend to be irradicated.
Carbon is basically sewn together, and glued, just like Shredded Wheat. The design intent might not be maintained at complex juntions. (hot spots)
Metal tends to draw when failing. Carbon splinters.
Metal seems to age and resist the elements much better.
(This is all hear say. At the end of the day, metal can be used badly.
