Witness appeal after cyclist dies in City Road accident

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road accident near off City Road in Finsbury when a cyclist was killed during Friday morning's rush-hour.

The cyclist, a 51-year-old man, was involved in a collision in Dingley Road, just north of the City, at 9am and later died of his injuries.

Officers from the Met's Collision Investigation unit are appealing to anyone who was in City Road at the time to call them on 020-7388 6806.

Cyclist dies in crash on icy road**TRIBUTES have been paid to a "cycle fanatic" who died after falling off his bike in "treacherous" icy conditions as he pedalled to work along a quiet backstreet.

Sayit Huseyin, 50, a chef at Fish Central, in King Square, Finsbury, was just 200 metres from the popular restaurant when he came off his bike in nearby Dingley Road shortly after 9am on Friday.

He was airlifted by helicopter to Royal London Hospital, in Whitechapel, with a suspected fractured skull but lost his fight for life on Saturday.

George Hussein, Mr Huseyin's uncle and owner of Fish Central and the neighbouring Kings Bakery, said: "He was a cycle fanatic. He wasn't interested in cars or motorbikes. All his life from when he was seven or eight he was always into bikes. He was very kind and a very generous person. It's a tragedy."

Although Mr Huseyin was an experienced cyclist who regularly took part in charity bike rides, he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Police have spoken to the driver of a silver Mercedes which was passing him on the opposite side of the road and are investigating whether there may have been any minor contact with his bike.

But CCTV footage examined at the request of Mr Huseyin's grief-stricken family is understood to be inconclusive.

George Hussein said: "I've got no evidence but we think a car clipped him and didn't stop. No one could fall off on a straight road like that - he wasn't an amateur. It wasn't the first time he'd cycled on icy roads."

Shocked passers-by who rushed to help Mr Huseyin claim Dingley Road had not been gritted by Islington Council as heavy snowfall turned to black ice in freezing winter temperatures.

John Fleming, 37, a workman carrying out repairs for Thames Water, said: "The street was like sheet glass. All the roads around here were. We closed off the street by chucking a few cones down to stop the traffic. I put my yellow jacket over him to keep him warm. You could hear him breathing heavily. There was blood everywhere."

Mr Fleming's father Andy, 63, also a workman, added: "We saw the bike on the ground. There were eight or nine people around him straight away. Three people were holding him, asking him to keep breathing. The police were here within a minute."

One 39-year-old resident, a PA, who lives just yards away from the scene in Lagonier House, said: "It was treacherous. As soon as he was carried away the area was cordoned off and the council came down to grit the street."

A spokeswoman for Islington Council said: "We were saddened to hear of this tragic incident and our thoughts are with this man's family. During and after last week's heavy snowfall the council prioritised main roads for gritting to ensure that traffic could travel freely through the borough. We are still gathering information about the full circumstances surrounding this incident."

Mr Huseyin, of Bermondsey, south London, had no children but leaves behind a long-term partner. He had a degree in psychotherapy and was also a part-time youth worker at Copenhagen Youth Project, in Copenhagen Street, Islington.**

This happened a week ago--only just heard about it. Dingley Road is a tiny side street, but there is quite a lot of rat-running in that area. So sad to have to post about what appears to be the first London cyclist death of 2010. Rest in peace.

That is terrible news. I go down that road most mornings on the way to the pool there and I have to say. It was so icy last week, almost uncyclable. I wonder if he was hit by a car

He was a chef at my absolute No1 favourite fish restaurant and takeaway chippy. I miss it terribly since I moved away. They are truly nice people, George his dad is a real London gem, he must be absolutley heartbroken.

If you haven't before I recommend everybody give them your custom, their clamari & fried fish (plaice or haddock in Matzo!) are truly the best in London, and their grilled fish and specials kick arse too. The kind of plaice where if you don't order any starters, they give a mini one to share anyway.

I'm going to go back very soon after hearing this news.

RIP - This is my Landlord's cousin that has died. His uncle and family fun the Fish resteraunt. He was telling me about the accident today. I had read about it on here and I think he thought it was nice that I knew about it when I offered my condolences.
