ive got a xlarge raleigh record ace with 531 tubing. good nic, stripped down and cleaned (although have all the original parts still kicking around). Just got it but tempted to pass it on (having spend all weekend it on) as told its not too suitable for fixed gear (vertical dropouts).
am i being lied to or should i sell it? anyone fancy it? wasnt that cheap...

Got any pics of it ? Vertical dropouts are usable for fixed if you have a wheel with an ENO hub. Which I have.

looking on sheldon brown think theyre horizontal dropouts:
maybe a little shorter than this.fuck it. might just stump up for the eno hub.

dude!
Do some research before you blow your dough. You can get a GREAT hub for a third of the price of the ENO. Totally pointless unless you have vertical dropouts. Post up a picture, Its easy to tell whether you need an eccentric hub.

if they're horizontal dropouts, a little shorter than that. you definitely do not need an ENO hub.
thats easily enough room to adjust your chain tension, you just need to get the right amount of links, and if you still have trouble use a halflink chain (i doubt you'll even get to this stage) -

thats a good idea. will post a pic.
my g/f just saw my profile picture and commented on how appropriate it was. hurtful. even if sloth was a legend.
thanks for the reassurance

So why's everyone sneering at 501? It's seamless double-butted, like 531; just Cr-Mo instead of Mn-Mo. Look on Reynolds' own frame/weight charts, and you'll see a 'standard' 501 frame is just 100 grammes heavier than the same in 531. 2200gms vs 2100gms. How many riders are going to notice that?
And another thing: although the chrome in 501 is nowhere near enough to make it stainless, the old bike mechanics used to say it was a lot less prone to rusting than 531.

Why ride either when there's lighter and stiffer materials (including steel alloys) available?

Its affordable to start with

To start with? What else have you got?
Brand new Dolan track frame £110 from Ribble. Affordable, lighter, stiffer, faster, easier to get parts for and affordable.
thats not a bad bike.
