Loosening lug...

  • Finally did a maintain on the commute bike after the snow and salt.

It's a lugged steel (maybe 531) bike, quite old, with bits of rust here and there. Reasonable though, nice pub bike.

Anyway, on the headtube/down tube lug, a small (2-3mm) horizantal gap has emerged where it meets the upper part of the down tube.

Given the state of the frame, and age, I guess I'm now looking at a replacement frame. But is this gap potentially catastrophic? Should I ride a different bike to work tomorrow?

  • Head tube isn't connected to the seat tube, did you mean top tube or down tube?

I'd have thought so long as the joint is still good under the lug then you don't have anything to worry about. Although the gap may trap water against the tube, resulting in the tube rusting faster.
Have you got any pics of the issue?

  • sorry, being dopey, downtube, edited to fix - cheers
