The recent weather has only highlighted what has been an ongoing problem for a number of years and that is a lack of investment in an already crumbling road network, particularly in the South east ( and else where I'm sure). Roads that have been topped dressed with a coat of tarmac only serve to cover up underlying problems that snow and ice have now uncovered. In my area around Tonbridge/Tunbridge Wells (Kent) we still have potholes that are left over from last years bad weather.
So whats the answer? well more investment by local councils to fix the problems but they haven't got the money or so they keep telling us in the mean time we all have to take even more care out on the roads much to the disgust of car driving non bikers who wonder why we are sat in the middle of the road or weaving our way through pothole hell.
Is now the time for all cyclists, clubs, forums, LBS, and the bigger chains to join together in a national campaign to get Government and Borough/Town councils to fix the roads properly so we can ride without damage to ourseleves or indeed our bikes.
Blame Thatcher.
