Fixed or SS with front derailier

  • Is it possible to run a fixed gear wheel with a front derailier - so you can have a couple of fixed gears?

  • Why not just use a sturmy s3x(or whatever its called) hub. 3 fixed speeds, no chainline issues.

  • no because you would still need a chain tensioner to take up slack whihc would not work when back pedaling.

You can run a dingle with two chainrings to make changing ratios easier if you don't like to flip your wheel.

  • Thanks, Tommy

  • Does this work with any disc hub?.. or are there some favourites?

  • The white ind double/double gives two qiute different ratios with the same chain length. Should be able to combine the crankset with a surly double fixed sprocket if you want double fixed. It might even be doable with two quite different fixed ratios on one side of the rear wheel and two singlespeed on the other. The crankset if aimed more at the off-road crowd though, so you'll end up with slightly spinny gears.

    38 : 16 (SS) = 62.7 GI
    35 : 19 (SS) = 48.6 GI

    38 : 17 (F) = 59.0 GI
    35 : 19 (F) = 48.6 GI

  • ^ - $370

    Ouch.

  • Was thinking of converting my shitter road bike as the cones are gone. Man are they rough! It has taken much abuse and bad weather, but the time has come to get rid of it. Reckon I'll full length mudguards to my lovely Steamroller and use that more often. Will need P-clips as their are no eyelets, but I have seen it done quite nicely.

  • If its a cheap conversion. You could just use a road double and matching velosolo jobbies.

something like 50/44 on the front and a 17/22 double fixed cog on the back (spaced to match chainset).

    For 50:17 and 44:22

  • smallfurry, this is exactly what i was thinking about last night when i couldnt sleep, I thought I'd just invented something new, looks like everything has been done before

i''d definitely like to do it one day, got many other things i need to sort out first though unfortunately. Fast gear for commute, spinny gear for off road. Tyres would be a compromise though. Wide knobbly on tarmac ftl

    Totally my own idea.

    Ahem...http://www.sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html

I have set up a couple of mountain bikes with flip-flop hubs, so that I get a singlespeed on one side and two different freewheel gears on the other. This is done with a double chainwheel and a two-speed freewheel. (The freewheel is actually an old 5- or 6-speed freewheel with 3 of the sprockets replaced by spacers. In front, I have a 42/52 double, which I use with a 19 tooth fixed and a 20/30 freewheel. This gives 3 usable combinations: Gain Inches Meters
    52/19 Fixed 5.45 71.2 5.70 General road use
    52/20 Free 4.90 64.1 5.13 Road...when I'm tired, or hilly areas.
    42/30 Free 2.64 34.4 2.75 Off-road.
