  • Anyone got any of any type, I have a lot of marmalade oranges, could reimburse with some marmalade.
    cheers all.

  • not in brixton but have a load over here in stratford

if you are in need in a hurry and don't get any other responses PM me and I could ride some over meet half way or something

  • How much are you planning on making?

I have about 36 new 190ml (smallish) hexagonal side glass jars with screw closures (like this) in my basement.

I live off Lyham Rd (behind Brixton Hill). PM me if ur keen.

  • ooh, while we're on the subject - where did you get your oranges from? I'm also about to make a batch.

  • I went raiding recycling bin when I did this over the summer. Washed, bleached boiled, and backed the jars obviously.

  • raiding recyling bins is a good idea, may head out. oranges were ordered by my brother from probably the best grocers in london (He's a chef) if you're brixton way then you could buy some off me, I have too many. Olly, pm'd. Dicki, may get back to you, cheers all! Anyone else(could probably fill 80 odd jars here!)

  • I have no jars, but I'd buy one: f*ckign love marmalade.

But I can't think of homemade jam without thinking of this:

YouTube- The Day Today - Chris Morris - Jam Festival Interview

  • i love marmalade and am in brixton, let me know when its ready Yumm

  • plastic pots might also be helpful. And anyone after a fiver or tenner's worth of seville oranges then shout!

  • Are you selling any once you've made it?

  • Made marmalade for the first time last night.....tastes.....lovely!

  • i love marmalade and am in brixton, let me know when its ready Yumm

This sensible chap likes Marmite too!

  • Sorry it's a bit off topic but I made marmalade at the weekend - for a long time it tasted amazing but it hadn't quite reached its setting point (if that's the right term). An additional 5 mins of boiling turned it from a delightful tasting, golden thing of beauty to bloody awful 'burnt' orange with a harsh metallic after taste. Any ideas what went wrong?

  • hmm, have made plenty of jam but this is my first go at marmelade, did you use a different pot the second time and did you in fact, burn it? A small burnt bit on the bottom can taint the whole batch, you need a pot with a thick bottom.

  • ok, I've got loads of lovely soft set, thick cut, not too sweet marmalade, and still a lot of oranges. If anyone wants some for a small financial consideration, then shout me.

  • where did you buy the seville oranges ? or did you bring them back from spain or something ?

  • 'I've got loads of lovely soft set, thick cut, not too sweet marmalade'

    I want some please.

  • Haha - woohoo, I got summadat golden good stuff coming my way! Chaliapin (top guy) and I did some classic trading last night involving jam jars, promises of marmalade, a home cured chorizo, a large bag of oranges and a pot of rhubarb & marrow chutney.

Sod the brixton pound - bartering FTW!

  • @ olaf von pokemon. Sounds like you got unlucky and it caught a little. You gotta be so careful with the heat. Either that or the God of Usernames decided to wreak a little vengence upon you ;-)

  • sugar thermometer for the win if you're making jammage

*home cured chorizo - hmmmm, need more info…*

  • and on a 'things in jars tip' if anyone's making picalilli or pickled onions I'll be up for a bit of barterage

  • *home cured chorizo - hmmmm, need more info…*

Oh yeah - that's me. I've been messing about curing salami and chorizo in my basement, which is relatively temperature stable and well ventilated, for a coupla years now. Only really for home consumption, but I must say the results have been very worthwhile. I'm half considering scaling up slightly to have a bit of surplus for bartering and possible farmers market action, but I don't really have the room, certainly can't rear my own pork (hence no margins) and don't wanna get into the red tape of food prep and sale legislation.

Still, a very rewarding hobby. Happy to talk about it if you catch me in pub sometime!

  • Made a batch this weekend, now got Ginger marmalade, whiskey marmalade and some plain stuff, stunk the house out and ended up with one wasted batch but it was good!

  • mmm, ginger marmalade...

  • Olly's chorizo is pretty ducking good, ate half of the thing as soon as I got home!Whiskey marmalade is good but I can't bring myself to put good drinking whiskey into some marmalade.
