  • A set of chrome mudguards to fit 27's
And two racks, front and back also chrome.

Am looking for nice good quality ones, as slim as possible.

    Many thanks

    Tom.

  • Check out Gilles Berthoud if you end up buying new mudguards, SJS have the narrower version (40mm I think they are). Nothing like as expensive as Honjo Kokens.

For fancy shiny racks have a look at Nitto, Planet X stock some of theirs.

If you want second hand then as you were, keep bumping your thread and ask on RetroBike too.

  • Keep your eyes peeled on ebay. They go cheeeeep!!!

Oooh, good tip. I was all set to re-use some 700c sks full mudguards (plastic) on my Holdsworth, but I might go for the proper chrome 27" dealies at that price...

  • Skully - what are the mudguards on your Mercian?

Yep I found these too recently, such good value compared to Honjo. I'm getting a pair to replace my extremely battered chromo plastic ones!

  • And they are solid and can be manipulated to the smallest of clearances, although i spent about 3 days drilling, tapping, cutting, filing and fitting them!

  • Aint they lovely Tommy!? Easier to get them from SJS just cos Berthoud's website is mind-numbing! But more choice. I think there's an extra-long version, not sure which SJS have (they probably won't be either ... they do sell them with the fixings included, but haven't bothered to mention that on the site). There was some talk from vello, who has some on his geary Mercian, that the fixings don't seem super solid. BlueQuinn has some too, on his blue Quinn funnily enough.

wools: I've got Salmon Super Profil on the mercian and on my 'JRJ' fixed. 25mm tyres max.

Mad skillz. Happiness is ... a perfectly installed mudguard.

  • Brilliant info guys. Proper forum love.

So Gilles Berthoud mudguards are the ones to go for? Do they come completely separate and you drill and cut yourself? That sounds wicked.

  • How well do those berthoud guards cope with tight calipers? Currently have some plastic SKS ones and they do flex slightly when hard braking.

NB, Nitto racks may look nice but they are a PITA to fit, lots of different sized nuts/bolts that require 4/5 different tools, and are high(er) maintenance. Tubus, whilst not as nice looking, are dead easy to fit, bit cheaper and great.

  • Good searching Tommy. I'm having trouble with racks. I'm being very picky I think. I don't need anything for panniers. And I'm not really seeing anything I like, maybe they don't exist.

  • Definitely going for the Gilles Berthoud mudguards.

  • la lanterne rouge
Yeah I'm really hankering after some tubus racks. Not exactly cheap mind.

Re: brake clearance... If you got the gilles berthouds to fit in the space you have, you could probably dent/bend/flatten a section to accomodate your brake action. Chances are that your SKS ones are already a bit narrower than the Berthouds, so be careful, maybe try to find a shop that sells them to check out whether they fit. You could do what some would do with any mudguards and tight clearances, cut the front off so it doesn't need to go under the steerer or brake at all, just up to the mounting bracket behind the forks. Or use Salmons which are (nearly) flat, super narrow for tiny clearances and skinny-ish tyres.

What exactly are you looking for something for a saddle bag?

Something cheap, with straight lines and angles. Not for a saddle bag. And as simple as possible really.

Tommy, you're effort is immense. Cheers.

  • I'm just board:)

What about a cheap one that's close and cut off extra bits?

  • Is this something you have?

  • If I work out the exact geometry of the bike I want to put it on, I wonder if anyone would make a set, front and back. Interesting.....

  • We sell Nitto racks, Wald racks & Velo Orange racks.

Varied sizes, all amazing quality & classic looking.

  • Wald baskets? A few of us pestered the forum sponsor for them but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

If you go for Nitto make sure you check the rack's height for wheel and guard clearance as they come in various sizes, and it isn't always clear to the retailer which one they are selling (i.e. at Planet X).
