Are wolber rims any good

Posted on
  • Hey,
just spotted a pair of campy hubs laced to wolber rims in my local vintage repair bicycle centre thingy (not my LBS hehe) and was wondering if there any good

  • They are not bad. My old man used to race on them back in the day. Those or mavics.

  • ok thanks, good to know, i might see if i can get them :)

  • they come under the title of fooking good!

Their tubs were called "wobbley buttocks" though..............

  • wolber profil 18 or 20. good? flat enough surface for braking?

  • everytime i buy a bike from the 80's there is wolber rims on them, cant be that bad if they survived, alwys tubes tho so havent ridden on them

  • I have one Model58 super champ, 40 holer, which is lovely. I'm really hoping to find a matching 32 holer in 630 (27") size one day. Who knows, maybe someone who's got one will read this and take pity on me? ... sniff... blubber

  • That's why you want these:

Ha. Skully, I eventually got round to throwing out that weird old 40 hole Wolber front (+ Maillard hub) I bought off you last year. I came across another set of wheels for that build and the poor old tandem front wheel sat in my living room for a year getting in the way. I tried to pas it off as "decoration" for a while but evetually caved and left it out for "street corner freecycling" last week. Noticed it had gone this morning.

  • I ask about the braking surface because I saw this: http://www.velobase.com/ViewSingleComponent.aspx?ID=1E63CC16-E909-40BC-9E1E-CF2E68E3062E&Enum=107&AbsPos=4

but then I see many bikes with brakes & those particular rims:

so is this velobase guy an idiot?

  • Not the most useful information, but I had Wolber rims on my 1990 MTB up until a couple of years ago. They were great. I recall a test in MBUK where the Wolbers topped the results due to the lack of compromise between weight and strength.

  • I've got Wolber Profil20 (tub) on the front, running a brake. Lack of machining means braking is a little iffy in the wet but there's enough flat surface for the pads to grip.

  • They look very similar to Mavics Mach 2 cd. Are they? I run a front brake on them.

  • It's still around, (27") clincher! I nearly got this one when I was offered to buy a campag sheriff front, 40hls.
They seemed to be the best match to it.

  • Had some of these rims brand new sat in garage for ages, was going to build them up and never got rould to it. They were brand new and ancient, someone literally begged to buy them off me, superb rims and still highly thought of in the track cycling world anyway. Sold them, lots of money in my pocket and a happy cyclist! They held their value - that good.

  • yes!

  • Yeah.. i'm still using some Wolber TX Profiles, as good as the day i got them 19 years ago!!!
infact they're on the Kalavinka i took to Calshot.

  • I so wish I had seen that sale on classifieds earlier... will regret it for long : (
