I think they are a pretty cool invention - the golf one i tried was a lot of fun, and actually a great idea for getting round a golf course - i think the main problem in London is that they aren't really compatable with the city - in Europe you see them rented out for tourists to get around many cities, but most of these cities are largely pedestrianised or have big boulevarded streets which makes use of the Segways easy and safe - London is just not suited to using them safely.
Whoever said they nearly got run over by one on Putney Bridge, there is some old trendy designer/architect type dude who commutes from that way, then down Fulham Road and into Chelsea somewhere, hes quite the Kamikaze when you see him in action
