I think it is utterly sad. Imagine you give up your job to have an adventure and all you can come up with is to drive across your own country with this thing and a backup car. The biggest joke of all is the new york times comment (which is hopefully out of context).
The only good idea is to show the different lifestyles of the people they come across, but its also not done well.
