I can see some advantages for security/police use in closed areas over bikes such as airports/large sites where a bike may not be the best option. Presumably a speedy dismount is safer than a bike and as the riot police pic shows there are tactical applications as well.
If there are stability issues/high potential for faceplant they probably aren't suitable for londons famous london, due to the width a high speed swerve round a pothole would prob result in one wheel going in causing doom? Also considerably less predicatable for other road users(admittedly many bikes would fall into this catagory as well.
For private personal transport however they appear utterly pointless.
