To spray or not to spray

Posted on
  • So I recently bought this great 1960s Claud Butler electron, its orange and has some great silver stickers but the paint has flaked off in places and has been touched up by some heavy handed berk with a paintbrush in others.

Now my problem is this, do I try and sort out the scratches and keep it looking original or do I go for a new whole new look with a metallic respray. AAAGGHH decisions, help.

was thinking of re-spraying it black and getting new decals. I am leaning towards a re-spray

  • if you like to keep it original, find some sticker for it, or get it made, powdercoat it in the same colour and bob your uncle.

personally it look fine, in fact it'll look less appealing to theft, just ride it and enjoy it.

  • ... and bob your uncle....

How do you bob an uncle? : )

  • I think it all comes down to how valuable it is...

As i've got a 1949 Hobbs of Barbican with all the period clobber on it even bar tape. The more i read about them i decided that to keep it original with the 40's paint and chrome even though it is shabby. A mate said that if you do paint it therest of the parts wouldn't look right, i think he's right and its staying original.

    Yuk.

  • Yeh, i was thinking to keep the frame as original as possible but then I saw this awesome metallic pink bike, with an original head badge to tell what make it was. Thats whats caused the confusion.

  • If it was me, if i was going to convert it to fixed i might just leave it how it was, plus as Ed says this will deter theft. If i was gonna keep it geared i would respray it back to its former glory and get some new stickers.

  • Kevin Winter would spray that bike really good

Paul Donohue Frame Builder, Kevin Winter took over from Paul in County Durham,.

  • Seems like a reasonable thread to post a question.

Powder coat or spray? What do people think best?

  • Try UTFS, you'll find some really good spray and powder options...

Seriously though... Spray if you can afford to have someone do it really, really well... powder if you want something that will last and won't cost an arm and a leg... Don't spray yourself unless you know you can do it... I t won't turn out as well as you think it will...

  • PM Dovvles... I hear his paint shop is up and running again...
