does anyone develop the film them selfs, and then just scan them? what kind of cost are we talking for the developing chemicals?
Not that expensive at all. once you've shelled out for the equipment you need then chemicals are pretty cheap. I've been developing and scanning B&W and colour negs for about a year now and I'd definitely never consider paying to have film developed in a lab again. Asides from being cheaper it also adds a whole new dimension to photography as you have so much more control over the end result.

Canoscan 4400f - Flatbed with dedicated film caddy. Extremely good value at £40 - results are decent but obviously not as good as more expensive dedicated models.

Fuji Reala 100 is my new favourite colour print film. Used it on a bmx shoot with the kind of strobe setup I'd normally use with digital, and the results are amazing. I'll get some scans when i can.
Still not a match for portra nc when it comes to flesh tones, but it's got a really special feel to it. -

went to poundland and they had some random kodak colour film for... wait for it... £1 a roll. i bought loads of it because it was so cheap, but i also develop my own b+w photos when im feeling arty...

anyone got any decent web links for a darkroom novice?
Just picked up an old russian enlarger (which dissassembles to fit into a briefcase) .No instructions with it - I can get an image to project onto the base but i'm not sure how focussed/crisp this image should appear. Also got a few small pices of glass which i'm not sure the purpose of?

The glass will be to hold the paper flat, or if it's smaller 6x4" and square... it may be a filter holder or something.
You'll need an eyepiece to place on the projected image. This is how you look at the grain and get the thing in focus.
It's been 9 years since I was last in a darkroom, so I'm a bit rusty on the procedure, sorry.

thanks for the advice. I looked at a few sites last night and i reckon with a bit more reading up i'll be able to have a go by trial and error.
on another note - if a lense is marked up as 1:2 is this the same as 1.2 or is it 1:2 = f2 (i'm guessing the latter)

The enlarger came from a nice guy on freecycle - he'd used it up until 15 years ago. Unfortunately since then they foam in the case had perished so everything is covered in a sticky foam residue, looks like i'll have my work cut out getting it clean enough to be serviceable.

I haven't been in the darkroom for a month or two now, but its deffiently trial and error. I think I ruined a few bits of paper before I got some quality prints out!
On a side note I've got a fuji rangefinder ga645 for sale if anyone fancies it?
