Ah NYC, the place where the only thing bike shops hate more than customers is each other.
I find both trackstar and king kog to be elitist in sort of an off putting way, although they have never been down right rude, just kind of....not helpful unless they have to be.
Jeff and Continuum is always really friendly and they seem to do a brisk trade in repairs, so that might be a good sign.
By the way, you won't be able to buy a tyre in New York, they only seem to sell tires there.

try Affinity, 616 Grand Street http://affinitycycles.com/ or even better go and see KT at Brooklyn/Bushwick Bikes Shop at 1342 DeKalb Ave http://www.velobrooklyn.com/

check out Chari and Co. NYC in the Lower East Side.

I wouldn't think that chari would stoop to tires,

I'm staying in Brooklyn for a week from Jul 22nd to 29th, anyone know if there's a place that does fixie rentals? Even in Manhattan?

I have my doubts.
This would be a good time for google

You should maybe sign up to nyfixed and post on their forum to find out if you could rent a bike from a forumenger.....
-
• #15
You need to have an invitation code to get in there.
http://fixed.gr/nyc/people/?PostBackAction=ApplyForm
Dont suppose anyone here has one...? -

Invitation? What the fuck is that for?
-
• #17
you live in Brooklyn, NYC...that is so cool.

I imagine they put a restriction on entry so they arent completely swamped with people joining, but its a bit crap for dumb tourists like myself who just want to jump into the forum for a week or so, in order to meet people, go on riders, get a bit of info, etc.

not sure about parts, but apparently you can get a piece in Red Hook.
-

Yeah, you need to ask to get on nyfixed... Probably to keep out spammers etc... I got on there before i visited a while ago, brooklyn jack crank suggested it, it was good i met up with a few people, sold some bike bits to people and got some good advice.... From memory there's a link to apply to get on the forum on the home page, just send a brief note explaining why you want to get on there....

I'm a member, but I don't remember how I got there, and I found new york so annoying that I never bothered to post anything after an initial hello.

I can also vouch for Velo and Affinity, good places to check out. And, if you want to see cycling equipment worth more than most of us are, check out R&A in Park Slope. Last time I was there they had an $18k bike in the window. Yikes.
