    At your age you're unlikely to get into the fabrication industry as a coded welder, simply because you'll be up against guys who've been in apprenticeships since 16 and who have the requisite experience and credentials.

    For carpentry/joinery do you in fact mean furniture/cabinet making?

    For both frame building and joinery however the best route would be to start making items in your spare time while still working in your present sector. These 'apprentice pieces' more than anything would be the most useful way in which a potential employer could gauge your skill level.

    You're very lucky at 25 to have the choice to change direction, when I was your age I'd fought in two world wars and had 35 children to support, got up before I went to bed, feckless youth of today, pah...
