  • I learned my trade in plastering just by labouring for a mate. I had to go down to £35 a day to begin with which was a real struggle but within two years I was making £125 a day. If you fancy carpentry just try to get a job with any chippy in any field, once you're in the industry all sorts of doors will open up to finer joinery work. It's no formal apprenticeship but you are earning while you train, and I've never known anybody take any interest in a tradesman's qualifications (except of course mandatory quals like corgi or NICEIC) just their reputation and quality of work.

It was a similar thing when I decided I wanted to get into the coffee industry. I had no pro experience or qualifications but I had bags of enthusiasm and had done a huge amount of research using my own initiative. I got a job as a van driver for a coffee company and just showed lots of enthusiasm and asked lots of questions, then a year later I got the job I always wanted as a coffee roaster.
