trying to figure out how that could happen...a certain amount of force must have been applied but from where?

Rear mech pulled into the spokes due to poor adjustment in combination with slightly offset derailleur hanger ?
Threads probably already pre-damaged 'cause overtightened rear mech fixing bolt. -

Part of the rear mech broke off as well. I've taken it to a mechanic now but he thinks it's a good chance the hanger will break while being pulled back.

Is the drop out not the same as the C50?

Seeing that it looks completely different would suggest not :-)

Might be a last resort if the insert fails though...

Very pretty ;-) Looks like someone's done it in Photoshop. Is that for real?

It's fixed - looking for a 9 speed Campag derailleur now. If anyone's got one, give me a shout!

That's great news! Who fixed it for you in the end?

Ben Thomson (http://www.cycleworx.co.uk/). A small setup in Wandsworth.

Actually you can use a ten speed derailleur, the indexing is controlled by the levers. I've done this and it works.

A decent LBS should be able to put in a sleeve that can then be threaded to allow you to refit the derailleur. Dropouts can also be bent backwards using an alignment tool. You don't want to do it too often but it should cope with being bent back.
Hi, this has just happened to me tonight when I was riding at night, I was really worried that it was something that couldnt be fixed but im glad that there is a possibility it can be sorted. I was just wondering what does LBS stand for?
Thanks,

LBS = local bike shop. If you put your cursor over the majority of acronyms used, they generally are defined.
Not one on the inside of the rear stay then? Oh well, worth a shout.
