If you want to build furniture, start lurking on a furniture-makers' forum.
If you want to build bikes, start lurking on the framebuilders' forum.
Look into the thread I started when dithering about doing Dave Yates' course. Lots of people gave good advice (on a more general level, not just about doing that course). You might want to save up to do that once you've got some skills under your belt, in order to get the best possible benefit.
Try to get in touch with Barry Witcomb (he's got a facebook). They're building in Wales now, but it's noticable that the Deptford workshop hasn't gone, it just looks closed. I spotted someone going in there the other day.
Maybe find some other small builders and ask for advice, training, apprenticeship, whatever. There are a few hiding away! Check out GA2G's thread about framebuilders, get in touch with some of them if you're deadly serious on doing this. You can ask them, you have nothing to lose.
