Since graduating in 2006 from a B.A in illustration Ive been trying to work out what I really want to do for the foreseeable future (not illustration). I've saved up some money so that I can re-train or support myself whilst interning and I'm now taking my first tentative steps towards finding out about how to approach a handful of different industries.
I'm really keen to do something practical and creative such as carpentry or welding, specifically furniture making and frame building. What I'm interested to know is if anyone can give me some advice on where to start with either of these.
Ive looked into some short courses for joinery which all seem quite intensive and expensive and was wondering if something like an apprenticeship would be a good way to start as I'm looking at the whole process of retaining as a kind of five year plan. Would it even be worth doing a basic course like this at lewisham college?
Also I was quite inspired by Matt Wilkinson's thread here. Again I'd love to train as an apprentice frame builder but I'm aware that there is probably little or no chance of this happening. I saw the advert on witcomb's blog about four months too late. Is frame building an impossible trade to breach into?
There are some pretty knowledgeable people amongst our ranks so i figured here would be as good a place to start as any.
