I've had a similar experience. Bought a bike and the seller didn't pack it very well at all. This resulted in the frame being damaged, but Parcelforce were willing to compensate. I sent the frame back to him, packed it really well - Full of old newspaper, bubblewrap and used those plastic things to keep the seatstays/dropouts safe from being squashed. I then got the repaired frame back pretty much bare in the box, with dropouts exposed. Twat!
