Pedal selection is pretty important. I use eggbeaters as they never clog up or freeze, although I imagine many other MTN systems also work well. I can pull out of them instantly, when the bike starts to slip.
Try not to drift sideways. hitting tyre track walls and slippy patches side-on is tricky to recover from.
TBH if the weather is such that is a constant freeze - thaw cycle, and you have standard tyres. It might be better to leave the bike at home. As Velocio has mentioned, the cars etc. are driving around on summer tyres. These are'nt even legal for winter driving where I am.
