• does anyone develop the film them selfs, and then just scan them? what kind of cost are we talking for the developing chemicals?

    Not that expensive at all. once you've shelled out for the equipment you need then chemicals are pretty cheap. I've been developing and scanning B&W and colour negs for about a year now and I'd definitely never consider paying to have film developed in a lab again. Asides from being cheaper it also adds a whole new dimension to photography as you have so much more control over the end result.
