cheers illy that is a beautiful version of events and one that i would love to tell my grandchildren one day. sadly it would be a lie. we would have been juniors i think and maybe a couple of laps away from being gobbled up by the senior cats and pros. tony doyle frequently rode it then as did sean yates occasionally. if russell williams rode it he won no problem. when they thundered past it always felt like your wheel cones had been tightened secretly. our gearing was restricted but that wasnt the reason. i wish i had trained harder or more sensibly back then.
thinking about it your version kind of reminds me of what happened in a kent road race league but it was a sprint finish and we got a vcl three four and i got the third i could have won it but i positioned myself really badly on the last left turning before the line.
