Best pedals in the world, ever.

a) they ever get play in the cleat plate?

No never had play in the plate that sits on top of the spring, and I must have gone through 8-10 pairs.

b) and if so, is there any way of fixing it?

Not that I can see as the plates above the springs are pinned on.

Do yo have a photo ?

Where did you get your cleats from, I am having a hard time finding new cleats ?
