Go to a shop and sit on one. Depends whether your height is weighted legs or torso.

Did think of this - went to my local Evans but they don't have any in stock.

Ask them to run some over to the store. There really isn't any other way to tell than by trying them both out.

I'm 6 foot 3 and have a 58 which is a bit too small for me really.

do you mean the compact geometry langster, or the langster steel?

I have a really beat up langster frame in size 62.
Most of the paint stripped off, dropouts slightly mangled.
£20 including forks and headset.

The compact one

I'm 5"10/11 and i've got the 58cm one and it's perfect, I like to be a bit stretched out on the bike though so i'd definitely try one out before you buy it.

I'm 6'3" and have 36" leg. The 58 fits me fine. I do have a short body, long monkey arms and use bull bars for the reach. I find the stock bars and brakes uncomfortable.

I'm 5'10 and the 56 fits me like a dream.
Sorry, that's the steel frame not the compact

I'd go for a 56 (I'm 6ft and have one) as Langsters have a long head-tube so handlebars are higher than virtually all other frames. They come with 100mm stems as standard, meaning that you can fit a 120mm stem if you need to be more stretched out. The steel and ally frames have the same geometry, other than the sloping top-tube.

Thanks for all the advice guys, seems to be a difference of opinion as I expected!
Decided to go with the 56cm as there's one fairly close by on ebay. Can always move it on if I don't get on with it.

don't, 0'3" is bigger difference than you'd think.
get tape measure, go to the Specialized website, find geometry of said bike, write it down, go to your local shop, try out bike that has similar sizing (like a Specialized road bike), and measure that one too, check if data (although will be different) is similar.
good way of being sure methinks.
I'm 6 ft tall exactly which is right on the cusp between a 56 and 58cm langster according tho the size chart I found.
Anyone the same height tried both and which did they choose?
