Anyway, I reckon the answer is that dressing cool is inversely proportional to population density, as the more people around you the more people who can possibly see you looking cool. There's not much point dressing up too much if you live on a tiny Scottish island, or opportunities to see the latest trends.
I'd agree also with in small communities when you are meeting less strangers you worry less about what you look like. I don't care if I look a bit rough infront of my close friend but I'm more concerned if I am meeting a stranger, although anyone who has met will know I'm not that bothered in how I look.
