Brake cable housing/liner for internal routing

Posted on
  • Bastard internal rear brake routing...

Does anyone know if I can pick up anything like this cheap from a DIY/Electronics store? What should I be asking for? Or if anyone can direct me to where I can buy some for a lot less***** that would be appreciated. *****It's only a bit of fecking plastic!

I have some 1/8" liner, but it's too thick to work in my frame...

    Thanks

  • maplins?

  • Tried their site a few mins ago...Any idea what terms I should be searching for? Cheers

  • Bodge fix sorted! :D

Just an update for reference as this site is very high on google ranking, so it might help someone else.

    BMC Internal Brake Routing
Remove the front fork and feed an old brake cable through the rear exit of the TT. Stick a finger through the hole where the TT meets the HT and use a pinky to guide the cable into the entry hole. Now you can slip the liner over it (below), then remove old cable, pass new cable through and remove liner (don't throw it away!)

Maplins had nothing, so I took a visit to B&Q and found some Heat Shrink Sleeving which was about £3.50. Fortunately I had a small section of original liner, so I slipped a piece of 1.5/2mm sleeving on either end of it. Job done. There's no reason why you can't use a whole piece of this sleeving as the liner - It's just the right sort of material, bendy, yet tough.

  • For 1.5/1.6mm brake or gear cables, this PTFE tube from RS would be ideal

  • Cheers for that, I'll buy some now in advance :)

  • Or just get some 4mm gear outer cable, strip the outer plastic off with a knife to expose the metal strands and pull the plastic sleeve out.
