  • you can't skid. at all?..

    fixed.

  • If your bike is too small for you is it harder to skid? I can do a shit little skid but find I can't lock my leg early enough to do a skid worthy off showing off because I'm too big for my bike. Do this make sense?

PS I'm getting a new large frame anyway but really hope it helps with the skidding.

It's generally harder to ride your bike full stop if it's too small for you.

  • Saw Michael Jackson riding down Clerkenwell rd. I shouted "do a.."

    forget it

  • Balki, you drunk on mince pies again?

  • Leave the kid alone.

Kid? do his parents know he uses such foul language then?

  • Hell yeah. Another anti-Skidda here!

Controlled resistance is rad to the power of sick!

Just started skidding, really wasnt that far from hop stops etc anyway, guess the wet has made it easier, and Im a total kid anyway so whats not to like!
do a skid Pifko! your godzilla thighs gonna be a-w-e-s-o-m-e- at it.......

  • Done my first skid on compacted snow this week but still can not manage to "do a skid" on concrete.
Only been riding fixed for a month is it possible that my 52/20 gear ratio is a bit high for novice skidding.

  • Gearing isn't as important as people seem to think, you can skid in any gear if you unweight the rear wheel enough, try pulling up with your feet as you back pedal a bit, once the wheel is off (or skimming) the ground it'll skid easier when it goes back down. This also introduces you to the hopping technique, which is a far more effective means of controlling speed than leaning forward like a ship's figurehead and skidding.

  • which is a far more effective means of controlling speed than leaning forward like a ship's figurehead and skidding.

    brilliant.

  • ships figurehead/ skidder pics please fastfingers..........

  • LOL at that pic ed and rofl at the tags for this thread. I did my first skid last week in very wet weather after a year of riding fixed.

  • My Little brother was skiding 180 degrees (and caning his tyres) with a shit apollo that was about like 10 inch frame for kids when he was 8.

Wish I had pics of it.

  • can anybody help me out –*there's a nifty skid patch / gear inch calculator that's pink and grey with some big all caps type as the header. but for the life of me i cannot remember the address.

it was quite recent - i think i saw it on a blog.

    Edit: found it!

    and also

…the hopping technique, which is a far more effective means of controlling speed…

I fully agree. I could slow down like a beast on 52/18 with teh hops.

  • ^ the chainring option only go down to 34t, that is shit, I'm running a 30t

    the definitely calculator: http://software.bareknucklebrigade.com/

  • good point. shame java sucks :/

  • I had to learn how to skid switch, and now do so all the time because after long rides or if i'd had to skid my natural way (right foot forward) my right hip would be in agony at the end of the day. I think it's the pulling up motion wrenching something in my hip.

Having a fucked up knee from skateboarding on the right side doesn't help much either!

  • skid switch

try cycling mongo. and yeah, my hip got messed up for a while, but that's died down without me ambi-skidding. (doesn't mean i'm not gonna though)

  • daily mail headline in 10 years time:

"Fixie-wheel skid machines responsible for paraplegic generation"

Lower your gears and get a brake!!

  • Did my first leg-over-bars skids last night - didn't want to, was forced to try by Norwich fixed people. Cool, but once you eventually stop you find yourself with a leg over the bars and no way to put a foot down or pedal. Frantic 0.5 seconds that is...

Just work it out using your head, reduce down to smallest number by dividing and then the smallest number (from the sprocket) is your skid patches.

    30 * 14 - Can divide by 2 to get 15 * 7 so 7 skid patches

    30 * 13 - Cannot divide so 13 skid patches

    etc, etc,

  • or just go here

  • Do a fuckin SKID!
