Why do people shout out "oy" really loud just as they go past in a car or van?

It's seems to me a pathetic attempt to shit you up, but feels like an envious attack.

Lack of imagination, if you want to insult someone do it properly I say.

I've had someone yell "BIKE" at me from a passing car. In comparison to that, "oi" is pretty imaginative...

My son sang Wagner's Flight of the Valkyries at the school Chanukah party - he may as well have sung Deutchland Uber Alles.

I heard a girl say "I hope you get hit by a car" yesterday. Not sure if it was aimed at me or someone else though...

Had a white van shout think bike at me this morning, I considered trying to enlighten them that this slogan related to the motorcycle awareness campaign.... but instead decided to give them a highly sarcastic thumbs up.... that'll learn them

My favorite was a another white van who decided to shout as they went past..... they left their passenger door window open, I caught up with them when they were at a standstill in traffic & shouted oi as loudly as possible into the van... they almost crapped themselves & did see the funny side

A subtle variation is Hey!

Maybe they are shouting 'Goy!', and are, in fact, berating you for not being Jewish?

I went past a white transit Van quite some years back, which they rigged so that the water from the wipers squirt to the outside. I felt abused.

I laughed, was funny though.
