Having looked at Multi_Groove's Cyclocross thread, and the MTB lists from Smallfurry, I thought I'd make up a list for Cyclocross bikes.
Some of these are fine for competition, but others are just superb mud and snow conquerors. Bigger frames, 700c/29inch wheels, and drops
handlebars, mark the differences from MTBs. Some, like the Singular Peregrine, make excellent tourers also.

    NOTE:
Fixie Inc Pure Blood now has a price and a spec - thanks Phil of Mosquito Bikes.
Mosquito handbuilt wheels - Surly hubs/Salsa Delgado Cross rims/DT spokes
    Truvativ Omnium track c/set
Avid BB7 disc calipers. Cane Creek brake levers
    Cane Creek headset.
Thomson stem and seatpost, Cinelli Graphis XL bar.

  • IMHO cycloX bikes can make the perfect workhorse. Mine pengy as feck, but bloody useful. I would echo the sentiment that some are good for light touring too. Mines a blast o the trails but beat the poopoo out of me on a heavily loaded metric ton.

No Fixie inc PureBlood? still not available as a SS complete bike?
No Surly CrossCheck? for the same reason?

I've corresponded with a few folk on mtbr.com, with those SpotBrand blacks, some race them. Sound like great bikes.
    Also interesting...

At this point we know that the Bare Knuckle, Piccolo, Soma Rush and Pake frames can accomodate a 700 x 30 Schwalbe CX knobby tire.

  • I think Specialized has discontinued the Tricross Singlecross for 2010 which is a real shame.

  • The on one ti 29er is a MTB not a cyclo cross bike.

    Good point.
CRC have reduced alot of the Lynskey range of frames. a couple of which are cyclo cross frames, one (or two) racer style and one multi-use style cyclo cross frame. They all have verticle drop-outs though.

  • Not sure if brake style matters to make it cyclocross? but a Steamroller makes a good cyclo cross bike too, even if not intended!
Can get big enough tyres on it and the large drop brakes let the mud through. Used one myself for a few months off road.

Got to be disc, canti or Vee really, otherwise brakes get clogged with mud / leaves and you slow down!

  • You don't see many disc brakes and virtually no-one seems to run with Vee brakes, due to their inability to cope with mud I believe.

  • My guess would be the v brake issue is that due to cable pull issues you can't run them with sti levers with out some travel agent hack which from some reports I've read is not that great. However I will add this is not from my personal experience, just some info I've gleamed on the web about the travel agent pulley thing.

  • alright experts....I meant as opposed to road brakes.....

  • Armchair experts, please. :-)

Condor used to spec their cross bikes with STI/Ergo levers and V brakes so there must be a workaround of some kind.

    .

Yep defiantly armchair expert. A different beast but on my MTB I have Vee brake on the front and canti on the rear (because that was what I could get hold of) and I don't find one any better / worse for clogging in th mud.

Yep the travel agent work around I was on about, although reviews are varied, hence why I supposed the lack of popularity.

More a case of not many bike companies making cyclo cross bike with disc mounts (possibly because of UCI even if a very small % race in UCI races)

Not a problem if single speed/fixed though. Just use 287V levers.

I have Vee brakes on my cycloX. Because its what I had. I have the 287V levers Kerley mentioned, and they work great. Would prefer something like BB7 disc's, but on the bright side, a pair of deore vees can be replaced for next to nothing (I crash a lot in winter)

Definitly becoming more common, eg I've been eyeing up the newer disc version of the Soma double cross frameset recently.

  • Do any cyclo cross bikes run 26 inch mountain bike rims or just 700c and 29inchers?

  • I think Specialized has discontinued the Tricross Singlecross for 2010 which is a real shame.

You think wrong. I have one. It was £460...

  • Do any cyclo cross bikes run 26 inch mountain bike rims or just 700c and 29inchers?

No 26", but I'm wondering if any do 650C for the verticaly challenged.

29" rims dont really exist. Its just the diameter after fitting a fat MTN tyre to a 700C rim. For example my 29er wheels+tyres are around 30" :)
A cyclocross frame would not have clearance for such fat tyres.

    • the whole UCI tyre/wheel size rule thing.

The 2010 or 2009 model? it is not in any of their 2010 press for the UK or for US and Specialized Concept Store said it wasn't being imported anymore.

Sold to me as the 2010 model in September. It was the last in the country and had to be ordered in, so maybe they decided not to proceed any further with the model...

  • I understand that the Tricross Singlecross 2009 is the last single speed version available in the UK.

The Tricross is still available in 2010 guise, but geared-only versions.

The Tricross Singlecross 2010 is available from America I believe.

That's mine. Clearly they decided not to sell it over here after an initial batch of samples.

I've not ridden mine much, for obvious reasons, but I'm really pleased with it...

Trying to find the rule but not got any luck.

    Refers to it here http://www.cyclocrossworld.com/Tech.cfm?Action=Edit&MenuKey=3&theKey=44&ShowDisabled=0

"The UCI limit on tire width is 35 mm"

Guess they no what they are on about?

Know, I don't think they do.
