Polo bikes, best set ups and gearing info?

  • what is generally considered the best set up for the gearing and best wheel options? are few of us in the most southernest points of sussex are intrigued? Anyone help?

  • Gearing = 45 to 55 GI on average I'd guess. 39:22 is an easily achievable polo gearing. Wheels = stronger is better. 36 holes (some have 48) minimum (if you can). DVs and touring rims are favoured. The hub doesn't have to be all that special (unless you've got particular requirements, like 48 holes).

  • Yeah, I'm running 36:22 which I find to be a decent medium; Decent acceleration with enough teeth to ensure traction at speed.

I have 36 hole DT Swiss TK 7.1 touring rims which I'm pretty happy with. The rims are laced to a high-flange Dura Ace hub at the rear and a low-flange at the front. Those hubs are not really necessary but make spinning so much more comfortable.

  • It's a secret, nobody really knows... some people tout the Mountain Bike setup, some like the upright/classic platform of a bike approach, some create speedy low-pro machines.

Experimenting is a good thing, your game may develop in different ways. Generally you should try to get strong stuff, especially where wheels and frames are concerned.

I run 36:22 freewheel for gear ratio, seems good to me.

  • GI, definitely the lower the better, im currently running 39:22 and finding it still a bit too high, although i am running 160mm cranks so have less torque anyway.

otherwise, lots of spokes, and the stronger the components the better, but ^ Jono speaks the truth, different strokes for different folks and all that, experiment and see what feels good!

and above all have a fuckload of fun doing it :)
