It's nice to see people in the bike industry pushing the limits of bike design in regards to weight, but it's so light compared to other high end bikes that strength must have been compromised.
If strength has not been compromised why aren't Top cycling Athletes riding them ?The weight is well below UCI limits. UCI rules state a minimal weight for bikes used in competition.
I suspect that the bike here cannot be ridden in any normal capacity without breaking.
Not at all, although I would agree a bike in this weight range is going to be very user (and use) specific with parts tuned to the rider weight and riding style - I know that this very bike gets ridden on regular 100 mile rides and is as problem free as any other high end bike.
Another much more interesting piece of weight-weenie history is that I designed that (now tired looking) 'Light-Bikes' logo back in 2001 for the princely sum of a Syntace F99 stem.
The whole point of the bike is defunct don't you think or am i missing the point ?
Your right in that a bike must meet the basic requirements of being robust enough for regular use - luckily this bike meets that requirement - he could have gone lighter with stuff but this has been built to be used on the road rather than exhibited as an exercise in light weight bike building.

The Japanese aren't good; Nakano was brilliant, albeit in an age when many countries concentrated their track racing effort on the then separate amateur sport. Considering the amount of track sprinting that gets done in the NJS Keirin circuit, the surprise is that no Japanese rider has won a sprint medal in the world championships since 1989, and they have been all but invisible on the road until Fumy Beppu arrived a few years ago.
