  • When your fingers warm up again and start stinging

That's something I always look forward to. If you don't get to that stage then you know your braking will be rubbish when you try (and fail) to squeeze the lever.
I have done this, one very early morning on the way to work as a dirty youth, slammed right into the side of a van! :D

  • street lights make your shadow massive, then you pass under and you disappear before you pass out the other side and you're big again.

fuck is that what that is? or are THEY really chasing me....

I love wearing my herringbone swrve shorts with green knee high socks, makes me feel like its the tweed run all over again.

  • oh, and not having to explain why you're wearing shorts in December when it's only 3 degrees out.

you short wearers might think you're hard, or you're very unfit if you are getting that hot in 3deg, but it doesn't do your muscles and joints any good at all. it's better to cover up.

  • bollocks. admit it...its all shit compared to spring, summer and early autumn. dark dank wet cold. the only thing good about it is when you finally get all the right gear and you get to your destination and you're not wet, sweaty or cold. by then its late feb and you almost no longer need it.

  • "the only aftershave worth having is one that comes in a spray bottle, so you can light it and use it to scorch the tablecloths in restaurants frequented by the sort of be-suited, estate agent, jumped up little prigs that douse themselves in the **environmentally unfriendly shite **and make you gag when you walk past one in the street".

wigan is becoming a stalker, careful or I'll have to get the pigs to put a restraining order on you.

Actually, I haven't been abroad for some years, and rarely fly. I said it because I would fuck off on holiday somewhere warm if I could afford to. Maybe one day I'll be able to have holidays...

I also said it as an antidote to the constant re-affirmation of incredulous positivity that this thread is full of. I don't like winter, particularly, and why should I pretend to? I'm not scared of it, it just happens. It's contrived and untrue to suggest I enjoy riding outside in winter more than in summer, so I won't.

  • see you out on the road sometime then !

    Possibly.
I probably do more road miles than most of you, except I'm out whilst you lot are at work in your little offices, colouring in your little pictures, dreaming of being alpha-hip urban fixie warriors, with skills that are the envy of every courier in town.

I'm joking of course, but I do lots of road riding atm.

  • I'm joking of course, but I do lots of road riding atm.

    No you're not.

  • yeah cool,
Im actually one of those lucky fuckers that gets paid to be out on the bike between jobs, and unremittingly positive yes, workmates have laughed at me after meetings for just keeping on going with the upful aspects of whatever it is we are talking about, when others are trying to bring stuff down- ha!
right now Im buzzing after coming back from taking a load of kids to Poole Cycle Speedway track racing each other brakless!!

in winter- in the cold, fuck it say yes, to all of it. every bit.our time is short.

  • Hey,

As Eyebrows said about the moon, I went out on wednesday night and cycled from Canary Wharf to the Wick, It was about 4.30 in the morning? and I saw 4 cars along the whole journey and 2 foxes, It was cold and crisp and so so quiet...and as he pointed out so so blue inky rather than black. It's the only time for a while we have two full moons in one month (next one on the 31st, which incidentally is a blue moon).
I detoured so I went a bit further, I was on the dutch bike so everything was reasonably sedate the moon at the front of my left shoulder almost all the way.
Secondly about the winter...when you cycle early and end up with frost on the front of your coat,...

    That's us told...

  • "us" ? That doesn't include you, Pratto my old son, aren't you some 50 year old from East Anglia who still lives with his mum? You aint no London Hiptster.

  • You aint no dyslexic London Hiptster.

    Praise the lord...

  • That's true, and for that I am thankful.

Scary stuff Dyslexia, the Big C.

  • What do Love about cycling in England during the winter. All of the above, gotta be upbeat, right?

What I hate is Jumped up twats with a serious dose of S.A.D. telling me they are going to run me off the road and knock me out for holding them up for 1 second (on the way to a red light just down the road as well) whilst I ride past a traffic island positioned so they can't squeeze by. Could happen any time of year but as some of the other incident threads on here attest the roads appear to get more aggressive once the winter blues kick in.

  • id much rather is was warm and sunny all year, but for bike riding i enjoy the decrease in temperature come winter. i also enjoy night riding more in the winter as its so quiet and still, and theres fuck all traffic to contend with past six.

in the summer i get wet from sweat, and in the winter i get wet from the rain.

this winter is my first foray into riding off road with my new single cyclocross bike, so when its been really nasty outside part of me is secretly quite excited.

  • I enjoy the decrease in temperature come winter.

True, it is nice not to sweat so much for a change, especially with a bag on your back.

  • Epping Forest,

    Sublime in the winter .

  • ^went through there the other day aye, for a work 'cluster' meeting (a.k.a jolly dressed as essential peer support) easy to get to from chingford and plenty room around ya, loved it. RPM I do schools cycling work for Sustrans.

  • aha! I am familiar with such things, we have done a few Rollapaluzas with you guys in schools.
