the worst luc besson film... fact!
Even so, it's still an awesome film, Besson is a fantastic director, seriously underrated!

Watched A Serious Man last night - very black, very funny - as ever the Coen bros means I didn't 'get' it and was thinking about it the whole way home.....I need to see it again I think. Damn them and their allegorical sub texts.....

Recently, I have been watching...
On the Beach - 1959 just-post-apocalypse movie, honestly one of the darkest things I've seen reach the screen. For its era it is so grim!Holy Mountain - Rewatching Jodorowski when I'm not stoned out of my mind helps, a little bit. Not much though, it is fully insane.
London to Brighton - really fucking grim, again. Proper dark stuff, prostitutes and drug use in the underbelly of London. Eurgh.
I've been watching loads of old Tarkovsky films whilst turbo training, it's really rather nice. The long shots and the beautiful cinematography give you something to focus on. Béla Tarr is a good director for that too.
I found basically the best t-shirts ever, if you're a music/film idiot like me.

I am so tempted to buy all of them. Shipping if from Cali though, if people want some we could organise a group buy to save on shipping? -

Nice picks!
I fucking love Jodorowsky, but I can't even begin to fathom the depth of the symbolism in his movies, and I usually love that kind of stuff. It's amazing to have on in the background when you're just talking with friends, every time you look back, more insanity is happening. I don't think El Topo worked as well, it was too plot driven for Jodorowsky's style to transmit what the fuck was going on. Still brilliant. I love the resurgence he's having, I watched his stuff a few years ago with friends, who are DEVOTED to his work. Apparently he's in talks to do a new film, Tynan help us.Godard is a dude, if you like À bout de souffle, try Jules et Jim, on of my all time favourite movies. A lot slower paced and all about the romance, but totally in style. Also, Diva is similar in content and pretty awesome. Overlooked classic in my mind.
Vicky, Christian, Barcelona was ok, quite nice and fairly well paced. It never really fired up until Penelope Cruz got on set, but when she did OH BOY did that film crackle. Gave me hella respect for her.
Is that Factotum adaptation any good? I heard mixed reviews from my friends, and I like the book so I don't want it to spoil. Some books are so difficult to translate to film, the adaptation of The Unbearable Lightness of Being was AWFUL, I had to turn it off after about 20 minutes, and that is something I so rarely do.
Has anyone seen the Secret Life of Bees? I got about 3/4s through it then fell asleep, and my friend stole the DVD before I could watch it again. From what I saw, it was lovely.

I had Factotum here for ages... but like a year really, and didn´t want to watch for that same reason. If you can cope with Matt Dillon (I didn´t know so many people don´t, like my friend that watched it with me...), you´ll find him rather surprising on that role.
Still prefer the book. -

Wreckmeister Harmonies - I still love after about the fifth tim of watching it.
Two hands - A mostly untouched gem starring the late Heath Ledger. Very funny and original.
The September Issue - Intresting look at the workings of one of the worlds most influential magazines. Grace Coddington is a visual genius!
District 9 - I loved this film would have been my favourite sci film in a while if it wasn't for...
Star Trek - Being a trekkie this was a little slice of heaven!

Eagle vs Shark was TERRIBLE in my opinion. It was SO forced and self-aware in its quirkiness it fell flat on its face. Totally crap.
Brick, on the other hand, is AMAZING, one of my favourite modern films. The pacing is perfect, the dialogue is just brilliant, the whole thing is wonderful. Totally love it. I'm waiting for the writer/director to come out with something new.
What do people think of Paranormal Activity? It looked like a crap jump-shocker from the marketing, but every review I have read is raving about it, and it sounds genuinely pretty creepy. Blair Witch totally terrified me as a kid; that naturalistic horror thing is usually amazing on atmosphere, and atmosphere scares me way more than jumps and shocks.

I just watched Inglorious Basterds...
Good film.
-
• #322
Yeah I was apprehensive about it at first but came away thoroughly pleased I'd seen it.
Other film's I've really enjoyed recently include District 9 & Zombieland - both enjoyable on completely different levels.
Thirst was also very good - Park Chan-wook's (director of Oldboy) take on the vampire genre - very stylishly done, well recommended. -

Yes to District 9. Saw it on a plane this week.
Basterds will be viewed nxt week.Oh and Rob, i'm glad you've recommended Thirst.
Was hoping it'd be good. -

Has anyone seen Paddy C's "Dog Altogether"? It occasionally shows up on Film Four although I have never managed to catch it. Other than that it seems to be film festies and that's about it.
Looking forward to the feature length, with Shane Meadows and Oldman support it's gonna be a good'un -

What do people think of Paranormal Activity?
It was pretty creepy... but I personally found the main characters a tad annoying which was distracting. I saw the original version, heard the cinema version ending was rewritten by Senor Spielbergo and is crapolo.
'Drag Me To Hell' was awesome..
